What is IWSS?

The UNBC interdisciplinary weekly seminar series (IWSS) is a weekly seminar series, which was started in the winter semester of 2019, between the Department of Computer Science, Mathematics & Statistics and Physics at UNBC. Since the fall of 2021, it has also been extended to all five faculties of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, including the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and the School of Engineering.

This seminar series provides opportunities for undergraduate/graduate students and faculties/instructors to give scientific talks about their research or an interesting topic of their choice. Students are especially encouraged to attend and give talks.

Why the need for IWSS?

There has not been many opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to give scientific talks outside of their courses. This also gives a chance for other students to find out about current research in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at UNBC.

When & Where is the seminar?

The times and location may vary depending the semester. Check the homepage for the latest information on seminar times and meeting locations.

Who can give a talk or attend?

Everyone is welcome to attend, especially students. UNBC undergraduate or graduate students from the Faculty of Science and Engineering are encouraged to give a talk on a research topic or an interesting topic of their choice. Faculties and instructors can also give a talk and as well as visiting scholars and researchers.

How long are the talks and what is the format?

The talks are approximately 45 minutes in duration with 5-10 minutes of questions from the audience at the end. Given the talks are for a wide audience from different departments, the majority of the talk should be self-contained; that is any special terminologies or concepts should be clearly defined at the start of the talk.

For example: A typical talk format consists of a gentle introduction/background in the first 20 minutes, new ideas/problems/specialized topics in the next 15 minutes, and finally, technical results reserved for the experts in the last 10 minutes.

How to apply to give a talk?

Email iwss@unbc.ca with a title and short abstract of your talk. If there is still room for the semester and the talk is appropriate, the IWSS organizer can schedule a date for your talk.
